Our
primary purpose is to research and preserve the African American
history in the Outer Banks region and to preserve that history
for future generations. We want to promote the accomplishments
and economic, social and cultural contributions of African
Americans throughout the area. We hope to protect the African
American legacy here by gathering photographs and documenting
the stories of life on the Outer Banks as told to us by the
African American senior generation. These reflections should
teach the future generations of a simpler, more gracious life –
although one of hard work and primitive living – here on the
Outer Banks.
Our
current project is the restoration and reconstruction of the
U.S. Lifesaving Service Station at Pea Island, which will be
used for a museum housing photos, artifacts, relics and
memorabilia from life at the station. For more information, go
to our “projects” page.
We
sincerely hope that you will share our interest in this project
and visit the Pea Island African American Heritage Center in
Manteo, North Carolina soon.
We will also look
forward to other projects such as this one which will preserve
the rich African American history here on the Outer Banks!
